Backup: MML shutdown

Short Description

Backup wait for the RMAN Media Management Layer (MML) to shut down

Detailed Description

Oracle RMAN uses a media management layer (MML) plugin so that 3rd party backup products can be integrated to handle the actual storage of the backup media pieces. Information about each backup piece is held in the control files and RMAN catalogue.

This wait is seen when the MML has been asked to shut down.

MML libraries are available from Druva - Direct-to-Cloud, Veritas Netbackup, Dell Networker and others.

How to reduce this wait

Ensure your backups are streaming to the backup platform as efficiently as possible.

If you are backing up to tape, consider backing up to a remote disk store instead.

Look at tuning the number of channels in use to maximise throughput.

Consider multiplexing backup pieces, but in the case of tape backups be aware that restoring from a multiplexed backup set will generally be slower if you are recovering a single file.
